BP Facing Billions More In Fines Over Oil Spill

Originally published on Wed January 30, 2013 10:27 am

BP has agreed to a $4 billion settlement of a criminal case filed by the Justice Department over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A pending civil case could cost tens of billions of dollars more in penalties.

A federal judge in New Orleans signed off on the criminal case. The oil company admitted charges that include misleading Congress and manslaughter.

More than 200 million gallons of oil spewed from BP’s blown-out well, and eleven workers were killed.

Coming up next month is a civil case when another judge will decide liability of companies involved in the disaster. The federal government and states affected by the spill will seek billions more in fines under the Clean Water Act to repair environmental damage caused by the spill.
