Insight: Baton Rouge 'Beyond Shovel Ready'

The Baton Rouge Profile from the Brookings Institution report, Beyond Shovel Ready.

The Brookings Institution's latest analysis of metro economic data, "The Extent and Impact of U.S. Infrastructure jobs," focuses on infrastructure employment for the first time.

The Baton Rouge area is ranked 15th nationally for the share of overall employment made up by infrastructure jobs.

One of the findings: wages for jobs directly related to infrastructure tend to be more equitable. The ratio of earnings between the top 10 percent and the bottom 10 percent is about 2.5, compared to 4.8 in overall employment nationally. And that could be promising for Baton Rouge, whichthe Huffington Post ranked 10th nationally for high for income inequality in 2011 based on Census data.
