Governor Bobby Jindal announced Wednesday his intent to withdraw the state from the Common Core Educational Standards.

Jindal said the standards were implemented contrary to state law. Even though Common Core standards were already being taught in Louisiana classrooms, Jindal suspended the rules and called for a bidding process to find new tests for next school year.

He called the tests a one-size-fits-all approach.

“I also think it’s a dangerous precedent," Jindal said in a press briefing Wednesday afternoon. "We have never before ceded this much authority to the federal government when it comes to pre-k through 12 education”

The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education issued their own statement saying they will continue to implement Common Core standards during the upcoming school year.
