Magnolias are on our minds

Sweet Bay Magnolia
Jenny Evans

The month of June is always a reminder of that Louis Armstrong song, where he sings, "Do yo know what it means to miss New Orleans." That's the song where the lyrics go on to say he dreams of magnolias in bloom and wishes he were there.

Many types of magnolias are grown here in south Louisiana. The Japanese Magnolia is a lower-growing tree. The Sweet Bay Magnolia is a fantastic native plant display. But most prominent of them all is the same magnolia that Louis Armstrong sang about: the Magnolia grandiflora.
