The recently renovated St.RochMarket was vandalized Thursday evening, with the front and side walls covered in paint and several windows broken, according toWDSU.com.

St. Roch Market is one of the last of the original city markets that formerly dotted New Orleans' cityscape. Built in 1875, the landmark has just recently been reopened to the public.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu visited the market Friday morning, with WDSU reporting the mayor calling the situation "a damn shame."

"This was a beautiful renovation," he said. "The entire community came out together. We took an old structure, we put it back into business, and some individuals felt the need to destroy that, and it really is just a sad, sad shame."

Last week, Louisiana Eats! toured St. Roch Market with Mayor Mitch Landrieu and interviewed him about the revitalization process. Here, he discusses the struggle of preparing for the future while honoring the past and the importance of the market to the St. Roch community and New Orleans.

St. Roch Market(2381 St. Claude Ave.) is currently open for business. Hours are 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
