After passing two budget cutting bills on to the House floor Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee spent much of its meeting time today arguing a measure that was shot down in the Senate last year.

“Had we pulled the trigger on this last year, we would be $74,558,000 to the good, that we would not be looking for today,” House Speaker Taylor Barras said of his resolution.

“I intend to issue a call to bring the Legislature into session to address the shortfall,” Governor John Bel Edwards told the Joint Budget Committee Friday. He advised them to prepare to be in session from February 13th through 23rd.

It’s not unusual for the Legislature to meet on the weekend before the session ends, but it is out of the ordinary when they get the budget bill done a day early. That’s what happened yesterday evening.

“The dynamics of this session is quite a bit different from anything else we’ve gone through, because you all know that these items will be readdressed on Tuesday,” Senate Finance Committee chair Eric LaFleur told the upper chamber, as he presented the conference committee report.

Today, Governor John Bel Edwards is expected to issue his call for the special legislative session to begin February 14th.

“The need for additional revenue is now, and it’s acute,” Edwards has said.

The call will tell lawmakers to consider a number of revenue-raising measures to alleviate the state budget shortfall, which Commissioner of Administration attributes to “poor fiscal planning combined with a shortfall of revenue.”
